The first radon nature trail in the world was established by the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Czech Technical University and the National Radiation Protection Institute in the Czech Republic in 2011 within the framework of the Radon Programme of the Czech Republic, with financial support from the State Office for Nuclear Safety and from the Ministry of Industry and Trade, and with the help of the city of Jáchymov.
The radon nature trail is located in the Jachymov city which has been historically connected with natural radioactivity and radon for more than 100 years. In 1898, Marie Curie Sklodowska discovered radium in pitchblende mined in Jachymov. The first radon spa in the world was established in Jachymov in the year 1906. In the course of a three kilometre walk information about radon, its health effects and possibilities of prevention and remediation are displayed on nine notice boards.
